Do You Anchor Your Budgeting Habit?
Most people I know avoid checking in with their budget or spending plan weekly because they think it’s going to be time-consuming or a drag.
But I’ve found that a weekly, not monthly, check-in is essential if you want to keep on track and reach your financial goals. Here’s a really quick tip to make sure you get this vital weekly task done so you can reap the benefits of managing your money well.
And that is to…
Anchor this weekly habit to TWO things.
One is to another routine habit, like having a coffee on Saturday morning, or after you’ve eaten breakfast one day a week.
So you know that after breakfast on Saturday is when you always check-in with your spending plan.
The other thing is to anchor your budgeting habit to your GOAL
Your goal or big why for budgeting is a really important part of getting into the budgeting habit. We’re emotional creatures and we succeed in budgeting most often when we can attach the emotion of achieving that goal to our newly forming habit. If we attach it in a visual way which appeals to our right brain then we have an even great chance of succeeding.
Hot Tip for anchoring your budgeting habit to your goal.
Create a vision board of your goals, and as you sit down to check-in with your spending plan, have your vision board in front of you to remind yourself of why you’re making this a top priority.
After a while, you won’t even need the Vision Board there because it will have become a well-ingrained habit. In the beginning though, it’s really important to push out those negative attitudes you might have about budgeting.
So let me ask you a question: What other habits that you’re doing right now could you anchor your new high-value budgeting habit to?
