Here’s something I’ve discovered over the last 10 years when I really had to focus on a big savings goal of getting our mortgage paid off.
It’s a great tip if you’ve got a really big savings goal and you want to ‘find money’ where you didn’t think it was before.
Only go grocery shopping solo.
We all know that shopping with kids is problematic if you want to save money because of the nag factor, and your susceptibility to giving in to their demands.
But if you shop with a spouse or a friend, it can be just as detrimental to your ability to withstand impulse purchases

How about that $50 leaf blower from the centre aisle at Aldi? Or those 4 decorative cushions? Did you really need those? It’s all these purchases week to week that leach money away from your most cherished goals.
It’s so easy to leak an extra $50 to $100 a week on impulse purchases while you’re shopping if you don’t have your wits about you. That’s $2600-$5200 a year – basically a paid-for holiday.
The fact is, when you’re alone, you can just zip in, buy the things you need, and zip out.
10 years from now, how will you be reflecting on how you managed your money? Will you be looking around at a bunch of aging, discarded stuff, or enjoying a growing bank balance or building assets?
On a scale of 1 to 5 how good YOU are at shopping to plan? Let’s say 5 is super savvy shopper and 1 is impulse shopper extraordinaire. And do you shop alone or with mates?
